Write protection document cannot open from an e-mail

I have a document i Word 2002, which is write protected.
When I send it to someone as an attachement in a mail,
they cannot open the document, it is blank when he tries
to open it.
The document is only write protected.
Does it have something to do with me using XP and he
using WINDOWS 95.
Dan anyone help.
