Writing Vertically

NAITO, yoshiki

Dear MacBU Developers (specifically who localize Japanese version),

Japanese newspapers are still written vertically, so are most of
magazines, novels, etc. It would be very appreciated if we can write
vertically better with Microsoft Word. Many of us are forced to use
alternate application other than Word.

Help us.

Unfortunately, Word on the Mac doesn't offer the language capabilities of
the PC version. You're correct in your perception - trying to do Japanese in
the English version of Mac Word is probably a real pain. I haven't worked
with Japanese & wouldn't know where to start, so I can't offer anything to
make your task easier. However, I believe there is a Japanese version which
would be a more appropriate choice :)

I work with a Japanese Buddhist group that works mostly on Macs, here
and in Japan. I don't speak or write the language, but I've never heard
a complaint about how Word functions for them.

It$B!G(Bs a problem of whether you want to correct writings on screen or on
paper. If you could tidy up vertically, directly, smoothly on screen, you
didn$B!G(Bt have to print documents to correct. Japanese writers who do not wish
the function mostly print documents for correcting. Since Word 2004 has such
a great capability to check writings over, it is preferable to tidy up on
screen.
