.xls is not a valid W32 Application

I installed Office 2007 on my WindowsXP system and decided I didn't need it.
I then started getting "is not a valid W32 Application" when double clicking
on Word or excel files.
Starting Word97, opening the same file and saving it would fix the problem.
Not so for Excel files even files restored from a backup, files that were
never used by excel2007.
Un-install and re-install of Office97 did not help.
What can I do to correat that problem?
TIA
Lou

Sorry, I forgot to mention that it would work that way but not when I would
double click. I finally found that the dblclick would try to start a wrong
copy of Excel(where that came from I don't know). Getting rid of that Excel
fixed the problem.
Thank yoy David.
