XP - Word 2003 - Desktop - 'Open new Word doc' - opens 'Convert file' from 'Plain text'

Have XP Home and Office Student Edition 2003.

When I click on New Word doc in desktop, a Word doc not open, but get
Convert file from, with Plaint text showing - click on ok and Word doc
opens. When I save it, am asked if want do so in Word or Plaint Text
format, and if in Word, to say No and then save in Word, which it does

How do I correct this? - How do I get to a new position where on desktop -
open new Word doc = just that?

All advice/ solutions gratefully received

Open Word
File>Open
If "File of type:" is set to "Recover Text from Any File (*.*)", change it
to all word documents.
