XP Word "Locked for edit"

All of my office documents have suddenly shown "Locked
for edit" and I can not alter any of them. It is a single
user machine with no network. No matter what I( try to do
I can not seem to turn this off. Please help

Hi Dave,

Sounds like an activation issue. Did you activate Office? Is your
version of Office an evaluation copy? Has it been installed on more
than one PC? Note that Office XP is licensed for one PC only and
possibly the owner's laptop depending on your EULA.

Go to Help/Activate Product to either activate Office or to obtain a
phone number you can call for assistance in activation issues.
