Yet another Read Only problem...

I am using MS Word 2000/XP Professional. I have a Word doc that magically
became Read Only while i was on holiday. I say magically because it is stored
in MS Visual Sourcesafe (VSS) and is checked out to me, it cannot be edited
by anyone but than me. I am the tech author here so no one could alter this
doc without me approving it first.
I had problems with this doc before, and the folder it is in, and ended up
having to re-name it, save it in a new folder, then close my machine and
re-start it BEFORE I could delete the old doc version and the folder it was
in.
I then had a writable version of my doc. Hoorah!
Until today anyway. :(
Now it's gone back to being read-only again. I've checked it in an out of
VSS again, that makes no difference, the File/Properties/General tab is not
read-only, though Archive is selected. All the fields are greyed out, so I
can't change that. Tools/Options is not set to read-only/archive etc.
If I close the doc and right click for the properties dialog I get a message
saying that the dialog box cannot be opened, so I can't check or change that.
Sorry to be so long-winded, but I'm trying to be as helpful as possible as I
see this question has been raised a number of times already.
Any clues?
Cheers,
