Zero in Cross Reference

Steve Franks

I'm not sure whether this is off topic, if so please
accept my apologies.
I'm currently using Word 2000 to amend existing documents
created in Word 98. This problem occurs in both versions.
The documents have to have cross-references to numbered
paragraphs, some of which it is inappropriate to allocate
heading styles to. In this case the lines are numbered
with ListNum fields.
My problem is that whenever I insert a cross-reference to
a paragraph, Word randomly inserts the correct reference
or zero. N.B. This applies whether the paragraph is a
numbered heading or numbered with ListNum.
If I reinsert the cross-reference specifying Full Context,
or No context, one of these will work, but I have no way
of predicting which one.
It's exceedingly irritating having to insert each cross-
reference two, or three, times.
Does anyone have a workaround, or fix?
Regards
Steve

G'day "Steve Franks" <[email protected]>,

When x-reffing a NUMBERED item it must have a listformat (or on of
those styled listy things) to make sense. A field dont cut from this
dialog due to the extremely inconsistent way Word treats numbering /
blundering.

It is certainly possible to cross-reference LISTNUM fields
from the Cross-Reference dialog box. LISTNUM numbers are
found among the "Numbered items", together with list
numbered text.

Hi Steve,

I've never noticed anything like this, but then, I never work
with ListNum fields. They've just never worked reliably for
me...

Anyway, my suggestion would be to use Alt+F9 to compare the
(REF) field codes of a "good" and a "bad" result. If you can
see something obvious, there's a chance you can manually
correct "bad" fields...

The only other thing I can imagine would be that, in one
case, Word is placing the bookmark it uses to identify the
ListNum field AROUND the field, and in the other the bookmark
is next to the field. Insert/Bookmarks, activating the
checkbox to show hidden bookmarks (sometimes you need to
click it a couple of times!), then using GoTo should show you
if that's what is happening.
My problem is that whenever I insert a cross-reference to
a paragraph, Word randomly inserts the correct reference
or zero. N.B. This applies whether the paragraph is a

Hi Steve -

I work with documents in Word 97 that use LISTNUM fields for section
numbering. When I need to insert a cross reference, I use cross
references to numbered items. I have noticed that if I am inserting a
cross reference to a section that follows the section in which I am
placing the reference, I get a "0" the first time I insert the
reference. If I click INSERT a second time (without closing the cross
reference window, I get the correct reference. Then I have to go back
and delete the "0". This behavior is so predictable that I've gotten
to the point of automatically clicking INSERT twice whenever this
situation occurs.

Another way to insert a cross reference to a LISTNUM field is to use a
bookmark with the field as the bookmark text, then insert a cross
reference to the bookmark text. These have to be manually updated
before printing (CTL + A, F9)but they work fine as long as you don't
inadvertantly delete the bookmark. This method also eliminates the
annoying "0" problem, but it's not really practical in a long document
because the number of bookmarks can rapidly become unwieldy.
