1918 ODBC Error when trying to install Office 2000 after XP upgrad

I upgraded my Windows OS from 98ME to XPpro a year or so ago and just
recently needed to use some Office software (I seldom bring work home with
me!). When attempting to reinstall Office 2000, I got a "1918 ODBC Error".
I attempted to install downloaded MDAC 2.8 (both the 2003 version and the SP1
version). Neither would install, stating "this setup does not support
installing on this operating system" (SP1), or "MDAC 2.8 RTM is incompatible
with this version of Windows. All of its features are currently part of
Windows." (2003 version). I thought I could still use my Office software on
XPpro...is this not the case? I really appreciate someone's help because I'm
afraid even if I buy Office XP, it won't install either!
Help! Please email me at: WmFritsch(delete this parenthetical
text)@hotmail.com.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!
