2003 version versus 2000 version

If you have a file that was created in 2003, can you open that same file in
2000? How would you do this if it is possible, or do you have to buy the
2003 new version?

Word 97 through 2003 all use the same file type and are reciprocally
compatible. Later versions may have some features that will not display
correctly in earlier versions, but for the most part they degrade
gracefully.
