2nd Request - Word 2003 Shutting Down

S

Sue

I am using Word 2003 with Windows XP Home Edition. Word always shuts down on
me after a few minutes. The whole computer doesn't shut down, just Word. If
I made any changes to a document, it will ask if I want to save the changes.
I can click Cancel and continue with my document. If I am just reading the
document or haven't made any changes since the last message, then it will
shut down the document and the program simultaneously. I don't have this
problem with any other software.

Thanks,

Sue

Lack of response might be because this is a pretty general error -- it's
probably going to require some troubleshooting to figure out the cause.

Some things to look at:
1) Is it possible that Exit got mapped to some key combination you use
frequently? Normally Exit is Alt+F,X or Alt+F4. You can check by going to
Tools->Customize, click the Keyboard button and look up FileExit and
FileCloseOrExit commands to see what keyboard shortcuts are assigned. (or if
you don't think you have mapped any of your own personal keyboard shortcuts,
you can Reset)

2) Is it possible you have an Addin running that is causing this? Check
Tools->Templates and Addins->Templates tab to see if there are any Global
templates or Addins listed.

3) Does it happen if you run Word in Safe mode and try working? To use Safe
mode, hold down the Ctrl key while starting Word.

4) Does this seem to be random, or does it seem to be triggered by
something? (e.g. always happens exactly 10 min after starting Word, or always
happens when typing, or after applying a style, etc)
