It won't open a database without it. I've searched
downloads backwards and forwards for jet provider 4.0
service pack 8 but there's no such animal.

Hi Dennist,

You are correct, Jet 4.0 SP8 is not available right now. We're working hard
to make it available as soon as possible.

In the mean time, Access 2003 will open databases without Jet 4.0 SP8. The
dialog that opens when you first start you data base is indicating that Jet
4.0 SP8 is required to implement expression blocking for "unsafe" expression
and is asking if you would like to open your database even though expression
blocking is not available. If you click Yes, you will then recieve a
Security Warning because you database is not signed. (The ability to add a
digital signature is another new feature in Access 2003.) Once you click
Open to this second prompt, your database should open as expected.

I have another problem ...

We just test deployed office in our test environment,
Used Office Resource Kit 2003 to make a auto config install, etc ... then
installed using command line on a few machines.

Now -> Opening Access 2003, then opening an MDB, nothing happens . any clues
?
Tried lots of stuff, I am a senior Access Developer, also tried all basic
steps as mentioned in

http://www-tcsn.experts-exchange.com/Databases/MS_Access/Q_20647805.html

also I tried uninstalling access 2003 from these machines, and then choosing
setup.exe from the admin install point, then install it again ... no good
either .. worse surprise is, it works on one of the machines...only so ...
now we are totally confused... so currently we uninstalled Access 2003, then
installed Access XP, same databases OPEN.

Using Access 2003 11.5614.5606

any help would be appreciated

Hi Pankul,

When you say "nothing happens," I'm assuming that you mean that the database
does not open but Access 2003 remains open at the grey screen, right?

Since this works on one of the computers you installed Access 2003 onto, the
obviouls place to start would be with the differences between the computers
themselves. What is different between those two computers?

1. What OS and service pack level are they both at?
2. What version of MDAC is on each computer?
3. What service pack level of Jet is on each computer?
4. Was there a prior installation of Office on either computer? If so, what
version? Did you upgrade or install side-by-side?
5. Just to be sure, did you deploy to both computers using the same source
and identical command lines?

It won't hurt to get a few specifics about the modifications you made to the
install using the wizard either. What specific configuration settings did
you make for Access? Thanks for providing additional information.

I've got almost the same scenario. I've even gone as far as creating a brand-new database in Access 2003, close out the app, relaunch Access 2003 and it can't even open the database it just created - just shows the gray screen (no errors, etc).

Here are my system specs
Dell Inspiron 8200 1.6 ghz, w 512mb memor
OS is XP Pro, SP
MDAC 2.8
JET 4.0 SP
Office XP Pro was on this system. I had done the in-place upgrade. When Access 2003 didn't work, I de-installed 2003, reinstalled XP Pro, then re-installed Office 2003 to an alternate path - still same results.

Hi Craig,

This sounds like some odd behaivor, could you do the following form me and
tell me what happens?

1. Launch Access 2003.
2. From the Help menu, point at Sample Database and click Northwind Sample
Database.

Let me know about any dialogs that you are presented with, which button you
click in the dialogs and the ultimate result of the attempt to open
Northwind.
