Access97 on a Windows xp machine with Access 2002

I had the same issue and was not able to find how to
install access 97 on XP with office XP installed.

But i I did find a solution to the problem, take a copy of
your database and convert it to Access XP and then split it
so you end up with a front end and a back end.

make a copy of the front end then Open the front end
go to the tables tab and do a right click and select link
tables manager, select all tables and the box in the lower
left corner to prompt for a new location when you click ok
it will ask you for the new location of the back end where
the tables are, you now go and select your 97 database.

What you have done now is you have a 97 database but it is
accessible from a Access XP computer also.

I would also suggest to spilt the 97 version and place a
copy of the front end on each user who will access it with
97 and do the same for those who will use XP, remember to
go into the back end and turn share and record locking on.

Thanks very much for the practical tip. As we aren't
upgrading other machines to xp as yet and will continue
to use Access 97 for another year on several older
machines I think this a good work around to installing
two versions on our one xp machine.

I have split tables from other objects in earlier
versions of Access for practical reasons. I assumne that
if I had done this (or do this) for the existing 97
databses we would just need to convert the "front end" of
the various databases and the links would remain to
the "backend" tables in 97. Until I read your hint I
didn't realize that Access had added this feature to
automate the process. Again thanks again and I have
forwarded both of the suggestions to others at our
station.
