The AutoShape object I'm working with is not grouped. I added another one
just to see what would happen and the "Action Settings" for my AutoShape
object, the "Object Action" is still greyed out.
I tried shutting down PowerPoint and re-launching it. Then started a new
presentation. Before entering any text or adding any objects or anything, I
looked at AutoShapes / Action Buttons and they are greyed out.

Hm. Are the objects grouped together, by any chance?
Using PPT 2003 here --
If I draw a rectangle and an oval and group them, then right-click, Action
Settings is greyed out on the menu. If I ungroup the objects, Action
Settings will then be available.
I'm not able to make the Action Buttons grey out, though, whether I use
AutoShapes on the Drawing menu or even on the Slide Show menu.
If you open a new, blank presentation, are the Action Buttons available?

I'm using Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 (10.6501.6714) SP3. When I click
"Action Settings" for my AutoShape object, the "Object Action" is greyed
out.
When I try to add an Action Button using the AutoShapes function, all of
the
Action Buttons are greyed out.
:
How can I enable action buttons in powerpoint? I've used them many
times
before but now when I try to add one to my presentation, they are
grayed
out.
I can't figure out why or if there is a setting/option that is
causing
this.
Need more info. What version of PPT? How are you trying to add the
action
buttons? Are the buttons themselves greyed out, or is it the action
settings
option that's greyed out?
