Activation for Office 2000 Pro?

Everyone is talking about apparently online activation for Office 2007. Did
we need to do this for Office 2000 or did we just need our product key on the
back of CD case?
Is this activation for Office 2007 sort of like it is for Adobe PSCS2?
Anyone know?

It has been so long ago since I installed 2000 I don't remember. Does 2003
need to be activated by Microsoft or does it just have a product key to enter
and unlock the program?
