Adding resource changes task dates: WHY?

A

Azer Nazair

Obviously, I am new to MS Project. I've read the books
and all that but can't solve this problem.

When I add a resource name - any word in fact - to a
task, the dates I assigned to that task change; the task
is lengthened considerable from 13 days to 55 days!
Why? I have not defined any resources in the project yet?
Is there a default resource calendar somewhere that is
doing this?

Any and all help is more than appreciated.
TIA!

What do you mean by "add any word" to a task? Where are you adding words?
What field?

I have no resources in Project. I noticed that the dates
changed when I typed a new resource in the resource field.
Thinking someone somewhere in this company added this
resource, I changed the word to something random. The
dates changed again the same amount they changed the
first time.

Look at the Resource Sheet view. Are the items you typed listed there as
resources? If so, on the far right hand side what is listed for them in the
Base Calendar column? Is it a different calndar from the one you have
designated as the Project Calendar in the Project Information menu? If I'm
guessing right, Project is adding whatever you type in the resource column
as a new resource. This is the deafult behavior and I've never understand
why its in there. To disable it, Go to the Tools menu, Options entry,
General tab and clear the checkbox next to "Automatically add new
resources..." at the bottom of the screen.

Thank you Mr. House. That fixed the problem and now I
understand how it works.

I am going to ask another question but in a new email so
everyone could read it.

Thank you again.
