Advance slide automatically not working

Hi,
I have PowerPoint XP 2002
I am not able to set any automatic timing in Slide Transition > Advance
Slide > Automatically after ...
The text box is there, I just can't edit it.
I can open .ppt created elsewhere with timing . The timing will still
work but I can't change it. (No, its not a protection thing)
Also, I have PowerPoint running on a laptop installed from the same
Office XP CD and the timing functions work OK.

Does anyone know of any missing files that would cause this sort of
thing. A Detect and Repair doesn't make any difference.
