alternative picture for grayscale printing?

I saw a document that had been printed in grayscale from Word 2003.
In it, there was a company logo that looked pretty unclear because
its colors had become mapped to too similar levels of gray.
If a separate grayscale version of the logo had been made,
it could have looked much nicer. However, if that version had
been inserted in the document, it would have remained in gray
even when the document is printed in color, or when the document
is viewed on a computer screen.

Is it possible somehow to embed both a color version and a
grayscale version of the same picture in a Word 2003 document
and have the computer automatically select the right one when
the document is being printed? Assume both pictures are the
same size.

I don't know if any of these approaches are feasible:
- Use some picture format that supports this natively.
Are there any such?
- Choose the right alternative with an IF field.
But I don't see how to check the mode of printing.
- Embed a macro that runs when the document is being printed,
and makes the right picture visible. However, macros may
have been disabled for fear of viruses, and IIRC the current
Mac version of Word doesn't support Visual Basic for Applications.

Here's a halfway-measure: I have found that if I insert a color picture in
Word and set the color to Grayscale in Word before printing, it is clearer.
The picture remains in color (you can switch it back), but you get the same
benefit as from having a grayscale version.

Thank you for the suggestion.
