aluminum keyboard and function keys

I just got a new IMAC, and when I use the aluminum keyboard, I cannot use the F8 key to extend a selection in MS Word (either 2004 or 2008) , but it does work when I use an old keyboard. How can I get the aluminum keyboard to do the same?

Congrats on the new iMac! But since it's brand new to you the odds are that
Leopard (and perhaps OS X) is new to you as well:) I believe F8 is one of
the keys commandeered by OS X and if so you have 2 options:

Use System Prefs to disable/change the behavior at the OS level so the
stroke will be available to Word, or

Use the Customize Keyboard facility within Word to assign a different
keystroke to the command.

Unfortunately I'm totally estranged from my Macs at the moment & I don't
trust my memory to provide you with more detailed ionstructions. You should
find any guidance you need in the OS X & Word Help, respectively, if you
search using the keyword: shortcuts. If you have any difficulty come back to
the thread & either I or someone else will pick up from there.

Or try holding down Fn key while hitting F8

If it's "fixed", don't "break it"!
