[ANN] Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) released

D

Diane Ross

Microsoft released Office 2008 SP1 Update (12.1.0) today just four months
after its initial release and a little over a month since its Microsoft
Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1 update. This is a major release and includes
nearly 50 bug fixes and improvements for Entourage. This update is available
through AutoUpdate or you can download from Mactopia.

Although service packs (SP = "service pack") may sometimes include new
features, such as Office 2004 SP2 (11.2.0) did for Exchange support, this
one does not. Instead, it appears to be focused on stability and
functionality. The big news is VBA will be returning in the next version of
Office.

Entourage users should note that the database will be upgraded. This means
you will not be able to revert this database to a previous version of
Entourage 2008.

your database.

In addition to Diane's suggestions for Before You Update, consider the
MS information here--note especially that if you have moved or renamed
the Office 2008 folder, you may run into problems.

[from the MS site, on the downloads page for 12.1]
____

Additional Information
If you have trouble installing this update or using Office 2008
applications after you install them, try the following:

Make sure that the Microsoft Office 2008 folder is located in the
Applications folder on the startup volume. If it is at another location
on your computer, move it to the Applications folder on your startup
volume, and then try installing the update again.

Restart your computer and try installing the update again.

Make sure that the user account you use to authenticate the update
installer is an administrator account. For more information about
administrator accounts, see Mac Help.

Make sure that you downloaded the correct language version of the update
for your copy of Office.

If you rename or modify any of the files in the Microsoft Office 2008
folder, you cannot install product updates. To correct this issue, drag
the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash, and then reinstall Office
2008 from your original installation disk.

If you experience problems opening Office applications after you install
this update, restart your computer. If you continue to experience
problems after you restart, reinstall Office from your original
installation disk, and then install this update again.

FWIW, I manually downloaded the 12.1.0 update dmg from

<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downlo...d=395D1487-A3A6-4106-A0F8-4D6E1D6D89D2#viewer>

Auto-update outbound is blocked at the firewall, so I don't use it.

I backed up my Entourage DB, just in case, ran the installer, and
everything seems OK. I opened Entourage, it converted my DB and
I had to re-enter my account passwords. Then it downloaded my mail
from three accounts without issue. I opened a small Excel file and
a Word doc without any trouble. All three reported Version 12.1.0.

I don't have any Power Point files to try...

One more data point.

Yay! I may even decide to upgrade to 2008 after that version comes out!

Hello Ed,

By "version" is meant the next full version of Word -- e.g., as 2008 was the
next version after 2004.

Word 2008 was a huge job for MacBU, with a new file format, new processor
architecture and new OS architecture (X-code). My guess is they would not be
able to retrofit VBA into Office 2008 -- it would take so long it would be
pointless. But they are working hard on it now!

It was a the result of feedback. Nice to know they do listen.

Competition is hard. When you imagine how many hours of programming go
into Free and open source software every week -- and for free -- it is
hard to believe that even a company as big and as powerful in financial
terms as Microsoft can even keep up to this challenge. It is, however,
even harder to believe that they released a product that contains that
many bugs as Office 2008 in the first place. OOo has postponed releases
quite often for fixing bugs -- not exactly a mistake...

Then I guess I'll just have to wait until Office 2012, or whatever -- if I
haven't switched to iWork, OpenOffice, or NeoOffice first.

I downloaded the upgrade took all of an hour on DSL line from Mactopia.
so I wouldn't recommends using the auto update.

Have on every , very minor quibble. the setting to allow for letting you
know when the normal template is being updated no longer works.

Also in the update for 2004 Office 11.4.2 (?) has the same problem. This
is on two machines.

Other than that everything is fine.

Be sure to make it understood. when you refer to *next* version you are
referring to 2012. Not the next upgrade. So don't get peoples juices
flowing only to have them realize that is 4 years from now.

I did refer to the dates in the blog. Sorry if you misunderstood.

The time between Office 2004 and Office 2008 was unusually long because of
the change over in code to Mach-O and universal binary. Microsoft's standard
release schedule is 2-3 years. We anticipate the next version ("MacOffice
14") will be out in 2010. Yes, they are skipping "MacOffice 13."

Mactopia could have been swamped with downloads. I sure don't miss my DSL
days.

Diane,

Do you happen to know if they fixed the Synchronization issue with Entourage
and iCal and .Mac?

I had to shut off synchronization because when I tried to enter and save a
reoccurring event as soon as it was "synchronized" it disappeared.

I am reluctant to turn it back on if it is not as yet working.

Thanks

People who use VBA know that full well. But up until now the party
line here was "no way, José", remembah?

No. I think this will come with the next Leopard update.

Here is what was fixed in SP1 for Sync Services:

Be sure, also, not to assume that there will be a four year gap between
versions. Where did you pull your assumption of 2012 out of?

Sure, it could be, but it's more typical to see 2-3 years between
versions.

Office 2001, v.X and 2004 were ALL released in less than 4 years.

No need to be a curmudgeonly wet blanket, either.

Thanks Diane...

I'm glad I asked you first!!

Happy Weds!

On 15/5/08 5:21 AM, in article #[email protected], "Daiya

(Office 12 is 2008, MS is skipping the number 13)

<snip>

Yep, 4,000 years of human civilization and the world's biggest software
company doesn't dare use 13! What a hoot!

Hmm, Microsoft ought to skip 14 too. There are 1.2 billion Chinese who get
decidedly spooked about that number. Ah, I was forgetting; rumour has it
that only one copy of any proprietary application from overseas ever gets
sold in China....

Cheers,

CH
