Assigning a Task to a Resource

G

Glenn

Hello,

I am using MS Project Pro 2002 and MS Project Server 2002 with MS Project
Web Access (PWA).

From MS Project Pro I have assigned resources to specific tasks. I then
import my resources to MS Project Server. When I open PWA, I can see my
resources in the Resource View. When I view the Tasks View, I see that none
of my task assignments made in MS Project Pro are visible.

What am I missing?

thanks for any guidance...

Glenn, in PWA's Task View, you will see task assignments made to you,
not to resources you have made assignments to. If you assigned work to
yourself, you should see that in the Task View.

If you want to see your resources' task assignments, you can see them
in the Resource Center.

Hope that answers your question.

Exactly what Tasks View are you referring to? The View My Tasks page? One
of the detailed Project views that displays task information?

If you are talking about the View my Tasks page (the timehseet page), you
can only see tasks assigned to you, and each resources sees only the tasks
assigned to him/her. Does this answer your question?

Dale,
Yes this answers my question. Thank you.

Some of my questions seem to be too fundamental but I have found PWA to have
a somewhat unintuitive user attributes. I have much of the available
courseware printed out to use and/or search through and I also use this forum
as you know. In addition I am looking to buy MS Project Server 2002 by Zhang.

One more quick one if I can...
I have hidden a task that was assigned to myself as a test. I am now trying
to submit the same task to the appropriate resource but it says that it is
unavailable.
Any idea on how to resurrect a hidden task ?

thanks again

You will make a huge mistake if you buy the book you reference in your
message. For an authoritative guide to Project Server 2002, please click
the URL in my signature block and purchase the book we publish.

To redisplay a hidden task, open the project which contains the task and
click Collaborate - Publish - Republish Assignments. Hope this helps.

Glenn -

I second Dale's last post. Their Project Server 2002 is invaluable. I
have a copy of it, and I have their books on the 2003 version. They
tell it like it is, not like Microsoft designed it (but didn't quite
implement).

Implementing Enterprise Portfolio Management with Microsoft Project Server
2002, is available on Amazon, as are our 2003 books. For 2002, your best bet
is Amazon. For 2003, your best bet is our site.

I appear to have the same problem as Glenn except with Project 2003 Pro and
Project Server 2003. I have developed a project in Project Pro a number of
task allocated to 3 resources (not of which are me as they all report to me).
I have imported the the project to project server, I can see the resources,
they have user accounts, they can log in and see the project plan but they do
not see the tasks assigned to them in the plan as tasks. If I log in as one
of these users and use 'View My Tasks' I am told 'You do not have any tasks
assigned to you that occur during the current time period. To see all your
assigned tasks over all time periods, click All Tasks'. If I select All Tasks
I am then told 'You do not have any tasks assigned to you in any projects'.
If I am to use Project Server I need resources to be able to see and work
with their assigned tasks, I don't what to have to go and re-assign their
tasks back to them, that defeats the object of Project Server. Can anybody
help with this problem ?

Thanks

Chris

You may just need to publish new and changed assignments. We had this
situation yesterday with a project where we could not see the tasks assigned
to staff in the resource assignments view and it was simply a matter of
needing to publish the assignments.

Thanks that hit the nail right on the head. I did as you suggested and now
my resources can see their tasks.

Thanks for your help.
