attaching a word doc to e-mail

I tried to attach a word document to an e-mail and something went
wrong. They e-mailed me back to say they couldn't open it. I had to
send it to them in plain text in the body of the e-mail.

Later I did a test by sending an e-mail to myself and attaching a word
document to it. I used yahoo e-mail. I got the e-mail, clicked
"view," and what came up was garbled. So obviously I need a little
help. Is it possible to send a Word document as an attachment to
e-mail, and if so, how? If not, what options do I have besides cutting
and pasting text into the body of the e-mail, losing all the formatting
etc.

Don't choose View or Open; instead choose Save As to save the attachment to
your HD, then open it from within Word.

Okay I get it. The document wasn't messed up. The people I sent my
e-mail to must have made the mistake of trying to open or "view" it
directly -- the same mistake I made when I tried my little experiment.
I guess the only way to make sure a recipient of my e-mail gets to see
attached Word documents is to make explicit instructions in the e-mail
on how to open them. Not the kind of fussy thing I want to include in
my communications when I'm sending my resume to somebody. Nuts.

If you are sending a resume, you'd better send it in PDF. Why?
* Because PDF is a file format available on all operating systems.
So no more worries about you having Word and them having WP. Everybody
can read PDF. PDF viewers are free, best known is Adobe but there are
others.
* Because it is a read-only file format.
I have read "horror" stories about a HR assistant who changed
significant details in the resumes of applicants to make some look
better and others worse.

There are plenty free PDF converters or "printers" available: cutepdf,
pdf995,... you can find others if Gargoyle Is Your Friend.
