Attachments launch

Each time I double click to open a MS Outlook attachment
or a file from Explorer my XP opens up an install routine
to try to load MS XP on my latop. I have to
cancel...default to the initial MS Excel, Word, PPT, or
MPP screen and then select the file from the File Folder
drop down.
How do I get my Outlook to open my attachments?
