Auto Text not prompting my words/phrases

I just changed to Word 2003 and cannot seem to get the Auto Text to prompt my words or phrases. I have typed a fairly elaborate list, but cannot get the automatic promp to insert. When typing my letters, I am not getting an automatic prompt for the current date, either. Is there a problem with my application? I didn't have these probems with my old Word '97. Please help if you can. Thank you. (Make it simple. I am not a computer literate person)
