Automatic opening folders of unread email

I use to be able to assign a designated folder where an
email is stored upon receipt. That folder then opened so
I would know that I had unread mail. Now the folder does
not open, and I am unaware of the fact that I have new,
unread email.

Does anyone know how to set this feature up?
