automatically update an inserted date

I have inserted a date and checked the box that says Update automatically.;
however, the date doesn't update until I print the document. Is it possible
to have the date update after I close the document (and then re-open the
document) without having to print it to force the update?

Assuming it's a DATE field, select it and press F9.
