Automtic retrieval of email

Outlook stopped retrieving my email automatically. I have
to click on 'send/receive' whenever I want to check. Why??
It does not even check automatically when I start it up.
I have the box 'send immediately when connected' checked.
I also have it set up to send/receive every 10 minutes.
