Backing up PST file

Whether I use the microsoft PST backup program or do a manual backup or copy,
the READ ONLY attribute sets itself. It is not checked on the original file
but when I look at the properties of the file on the CD that I made the copy
to, the attribute is set. This seems to interfere with moving the file to a
different computer. Any help? Thank you.

That is normal behaviour. Copy the PST file from the CD to the desired
location and remove the read only attribute. Then open Outlook and use File >
Open, and browse to your PST file to open it.

Files on a CD are ALWAYS read-only and cannot be anything else, since CDs
are write-once devices. You must always copy them back to hard drive and
remove the read-only attribute.

Thanks to both of you for your assistance. If I copy and paste the cd file to
the PST location, it works fine. I was trying to follow the procedure spelled
out in " Back up Outlook data with the Microsoft Outlook Personal folders
backup Tool" which indicated I could use the import/export function to
complete the move. Not very clear (at least to me). I'll fool around somemore
with it and see what happens. Thanks, again.

This can be a hazardous practice. If you overwrite any PST that is part of
an active mail profile you most likely corrupt the mail profile.

Exporting and importing are appropriate for moving data between Outlook and
some other program that is not Outlook. Data is always lost in the
import/export process.

Maybe you should advise microsoft of your feelings on the matter of importing
backed up PST files from one computer to another. This procedure was taken
from an article that appeared on Office Online. I am not knowledgeable enough
to just start shotgunning things. I usually take my direction from microsoft
documents. Thanks again for your help and advice.

MVPs have been advising Microsoft for years on the inadvisability of
import/export for moving data from one Outlook instance to another.
