everytime I open a file, a "ghost file" gets created which I then have to
delete. This file is in lighter letters. How do I stop this from happening?

If you mean the document's temporary file, then this is supposed to happen.
Leave it alone! If it remains after Word is closed then you can delete it -

I open tons of files every day. Delete the "ghost" each time gets
time-consuming.

If it is not being deleted when you close the document, *then* you have a
problem. But the creation of the file is not a problem.
