Please don't be condescending.

I wasn't, as far as I can tell. How can I know what's obvious to you?
People of all levels of expertise visit here.
I followed your instructions. The
problem was when I went to import the information back into OUTLOOK
from the backup pst file there was a problem and I thought I had
backed up an incorrect file. I have subsequently downloaded the PST
Back-up tool and I am now backing up on a regular basis. I wanted to
know how to import certain folders from the pst into the clean
install of OUTLOOK and it wasn't clear.

You open the PST (FIle>Open>Outlook Data File) containing the informaiton
you want. Copy that information back to your default folders. No import
needed.
I'd also like to know what the advantage is of having more than one
pst file and more than one backup. I like to keep all my past email
and my contacts, but why does that require more than one backup?

The advantanges of more than one PST file can be tremendous to some and
non-existent for others. It all depends on the individual.

As for backups, Having one good backup is probably sufficient for most
people, but to be truly safe, it should not be on the same disk or, in fact,
on the same PC as the original. Burn it to a CD. Make sure you can restore
it before relying on it, however.

Dear Brian:

Here is what I want to do and maybe you can tell me step by step how to
accomplish it.

I have OUTLOOK 2007. Everytime I receive an email I create a folder for
that particular person or topic to file the email into. Therefore under
personal folders I have many, many subfolders.

I'd like to back up all those folders and label them with a date (for
example "Outlook mail from May 1st to May 31st").

Then, I'd like to clear all those folders and emails out of Outlook and
start fresh again. Do I just delete all the folders one by one?

Then, I'd like to know how to refer back to the old email if I need to and
if needed import some of it back into OUTLOOK. Can this be done.

Forgot to ask...

When you say "Copy information back to your default folders" how is that done?

We'll talk about the rest when you've answered the question.

Dear Brian:

Primarily I'd like to back-up my mail folders.

My Contacts & Calendar only need to be backed up from time to time, but my
email needs to be backed up on a monthly basis because I get so much of it in
my business.

I'd like to be able to back-up my mail folders separate from my CONTACTS &
CALENDAR if possible.

I'm extremely organized and I want to be able to find everything!

Create a new PST with File>New>Outlook Data File. Once it has been created
and displays in your folder list, click and drag (for Move) or Ctrl-click
and drag (for copy) any folder or any parent folder whose children you want
to save to the root of that new PST. When finished, close that PST with
right-click>Close. If you copied instead of moved and you then want to
delete the contents of a folder, press Ctrl-A to select all the entries and
then press Delete. Any time you want to see that data again, just add the
PST back into your mail profile with File>Open>Outlook Data File.

I did as suggested in the MS How to article which does suggest creating a new
folder and putting it in My Documents.

However, when I then opened Outlook nothing was there! I clicked and
clicked and finally it opened in one of the personal folder links. But I
don't have all my messages.

I tried to put the PST file back in the Doc and Settings location, but then
there were 2 PST files and I didn't want to overwrite thinking that I would
lose date.

Is there a way to merge? What to do ?
