baseline Start Drop Down Box

Why is there a dropdown box in the Baseline Start Field. This allows you to
change the date of he task's baseline start and finish dates. It seems to
me that these dates should never be manually changed.

It is simply for convenience. I agree that manually messing with the
baseline is not a good practice. The whole idea of "baseline" kinda gets
lost if it becomes easy to manipulate. However, there are times when the
Baseline Start and/or Baseline Finish need to be adjusted independently
of one another. This cannot be done via Tools/Tracking/Save Baseline.
But in my opinion, typing in a date is just as convenient, or more so,
then selecting from a drop down calendar.
