BOXES DISAPPEAR WITHIN TABLES

In Word 2003 when attempting to put a rectangle or circle over a number the
object either disappears or moves the number. Can't figure this one out.
Have trying justification options, etc. Has anyone had this problem.

You may have to use the drawing toolbar, Draw-->Order-->Send backward to put
the circle behind the number, or just remove the fill from the circle.
