My comments are { bracketed after each STEP }

Here are my thoughts about your ten suggested steps......

++If I don't delete some of the prior .htm files, isn't there a chance that
when I try to upload the .pub files (index_files & index.htm) some of the old
index_files & index.htm files might load instead of the newer ones? I am
beginning to sound like someone who believes in reincarnation!! ++
++ Right now, nothing seems easy, but rest assured, I will be in better
shape tomorrow ++

++ OK, thanks, I do understand this one ++

++ Thanks, I am making some progress, and it is good to know that I am
beginning to understand you ++

++ OK, Spike, I remember now what to do, and thanks for reminding me ++

++ Got it ++

++ Like I said this is a new one, but it sounds like a foolproof way to
check the site before I upload it using FileZilla ++

++ Again, thanks for checking back and for reading the long list of C-Drive
stem information, before commenting. I am still frustrated not knowing what
to cut, or what to redo, or do over. I really hope that when we finish I can
honestly say that I finally know what to do. ++

NO. The only way the files can get copied to the server is if you
specifically do so. This is why I suggested a NEW folder so you will only
copy the latest files to the server.

Just make sure that you test the site in the NEW folder on your computer
before you copy files to the server. I have NO clue to what the
ftp.lcn-hoa.com location is about (unless you are referring to a network
place you established on your computer). If you are using FileZilla I see
no reason for that directory or network place. Your former helper had a
plan I assume. When all is said and done, I suggest that you delete any
files and folders on your hard drive referring to your site with the
exception of the latest NEW folder of files. This will insure that any
corrupted or old files will not be uploaded in the future.

Spike, there is a funny thing with the ftp.lcn-hoa.com folder on my C-Drive
Stem.

My friend, who originally helped me, does not remember ever creating a
folder called, "ftp.hoa-lcn.hoa." I surely didn't create this folder, BUT
when I deleted the "HOA - Website Files" & the "index_files," inside of the
ftp.lcn-hoa.com folder, the whole published website at GoDaddy vanished!

Not only that, but I never dragged and dropped or copied any files into the
ftp.lcn-hoa.com folder. I always thought either FileZilla created the folder
and the files inside, or it was created after I published the .pub file to
the GoDaddy website?

I asked a tech at FileZilla, and he could NOT say one way or the other if
the data inside of ftp.lcn-hoa.com was created by FileZilla when I moved the
files to the website at GoDaddy. I askded a tech at GoDaddy the same
question, and he didn't know either.

If deleting the HOA - Website Files and index_files from ftp.lcn-hoa.com
brought the website at GoDaddy down, isn't there a chance that it will happen
again -- after I publish the revised website at GoDaddy?

I have no problem trying it, and starting over again. This is just a
rhetorical question, not a question I expect you to answer.

Many thanks, my friend, Thomboy

I believe that your are looking at the ftp path in your network places. If
you delete those files you will indeed delete them on the server. I suggest
that you delete the ftp folder then using filezilla upload the new files to
the server. I just looked at your server and the site is still there with
the OLD links to the PDF files.

Spike:

The "ftp.lcn-hoa.com" folder is on the C-Drive Stem right below the listing
of Local Drive (C), DVD RW Drive (D), Removable Disk (E through H). There is
another folder shown on the C-Drive stem even below the ftp folder called
"Network," which may be what you call the ftp path on the network server?

It may all get back to the right names for folders on the C-Drive; maybe
they are all on the ftp path on the network server? I guess to better enable
me to sort this out, could you please answer another question:

QUESTION: What type of folders are on the network server, where arer they
located, and how can they be seen?

Yes, I have NOT changed anything on the website as yet, because I am waiting
for an attorney to review changes to our "bylaws" before I post this .pdf
file, and the other three CC&R .pdf files to the "DOWNLOADS" folder on the
hard drive.

Thanks for coming back to check up on me.

QUESTION: What type of folders are on the network server, where arer they
located, and how can they be seen?

{ Using FileZilla you will see the root directory of the server and any
folders created there. Your index.htm and the supporting pages and files
will be in the root directory. You will create the folder "downloads" in
the root directory of the server. Were you able to check out your newly
created web site and links to the PDF's on the hard drive? }

NEW QUESTION RELATED TO THE CREATION OF HYPERLINKS:

I am reviewing the Office Online "Create a hyperlink" publication, and it
gives four specific types of hyperlinks.

Which one should I use for my four .pdf files?

I can right click on any of the existing hyperlinked four legal documents on
page 9 of my .pub file (bylaws, and CC&Rs), and edit or modify them. Which
of the three choices should I use:

On the left side of the page I see several boxes:

1. Existing File or Web Page
2. Place in this document
3. Create a new document

The first gives three options: current folder; browsed pages; and recent files

The second option doesn't seem like the right one.

The third gives only one option, the path to the new document, which could
be "fttp://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/bylaws_LCHII_6.pdf."

Am I picking the right option here?

P.S. I have created the HOA WEBSITE folder, a subfolder inside of it,
called, "downloads," without the quotes. This folder and sub-folder are on
the stem of the folders on "Thom Sepic Office Computer" on the C-Drive, and I
am ready to follow your directions, once I get the OK from the attorney.

Spike:

I created a sub-folder in my new main folder (HOA WEBSITE) for my .pub file,
called, "downloads."

Inside of "downloads," I placed copies of <<all four>> of my .pdf files.

The first hyperlink to the bylaws .pdf file is shown as:

http://www.lcn-hoa.com/downloads/bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf

The file name of the same file in the sub-folder "downloads," is named:

bylaws_LCNII_6.pdf

When I double-clicked on the new "index.htm" file inside of HOA WEBSITE, up
comes a copy of the website as it will look when published.

Everything works fine, except the .pdf files

When I click on any of them, I get the following message:

You are the owner of this web site and you have not uploaded (or incorrectly
uploaded) your web site. For information on uploading your web site using FTP
client software or web design software, click here for FTP Upload Information.

QUESTION: Maybe <<placement>> of the new "HOA WEBSITE" and its sub-folder
"downloads" on my C-Drive stem is causing the problem?? Maybe this new main
folder and the sub-folder should be placed below:

Computer
Local Disk (C:)
DVD RW Drive (D:)
Removable Disk (E:), and so on?

It is now below "Desktop," which is at the top of "My Computer" stem, and
among the folders for "Thom Sepic," which includes such folders as .java;
AppData; Application Data; Contacts; Desktop; Documents; Downloads;
Favorites; HOA WEBSITE (with the sub-folder, downloads); Links, etc.

Otherwise, I am at a loss as to why I can see all the "new" changes I have
made to my .pub file for the website when published, except the four .pdf
files.

Best, Thomboy

I am responsible for that error (sorry) I had you write an absolute link
for the pdf files. On the net it will work but not on your computer. If
you change the link to a relative link "/downloads/XXX.pdf" without quotes
it will work on your computer and the net.

Thank goodness! When I was creating the hyperlink, I kept asking myself,
"how will a web address connect to a .pdf file in my computer?"

I even thought that somehow the existing stem folder, "www.lnc-hoa.com"
would somehow come into play, if I added that type of web-based address to
file name in the hyperlink, e.g. add "http://www.lch-hoa.com/."

OK, I will drop the "http://www.lcn-hoa.com/" from the hyperlink address,
and see if it works.

Now that I have AGAIN brought up that folder on the C-Drive stem,
"www.lcn-hoa.com," what the hell is it, or what was or is it used for?

This may not be a good question to ask, but I am still plagued by trying to
figure out what the "ftp.lcn-hoa.com," and the "www.lcn-hoa.com" folders are
for with all the same files inside? Remember they both have the
"index_files" and the "index.htm" inside, plus those other three
files...........

How can I resolve this question?

Thanks for the reply, and I am glad that once in awhile my suspicions are
correct.

Spike:

What would happen if when I clicked on "publish to the web," when at my .pub
file, I saved the "index_files" to the folder "www.lcn-hoa.com," and also
created a sub-folder for "www.lcn-hoa.com," called "downloads," and then
copied and pasted my four .pdf files into the "downloads" sub-folder.

If once the NEW "index_files" are in the "www.lcn-hoa.com" folder along with
the OLD "index_files," I could just right click on the open area on the right
of the C-Drive stem with "www.lcn-hoa.com" highlighted, and click on refresh
to make the NEW "index_files" over write the OLD "index_files?"

That folder "www.lcn-hoa.com" has to fit into this puzzle somehow?

I can not see any reason to do that. The method I gave you is a method that
is used by many folks and works well. If David, Rob or Don want to jump in
here, Please do. Maybe I am not explaining the situation correctly.

Spike, I don't doubt you for a second. I am just asking to determine what
those two folders are for with regard to the website?

You and Dave have given me excellent help along the way, and this is no time
to doubt that.

I will wait to see if Rob, Dave or Don have anything to add besides, "quit
asking so many questions, and just do what he says."

Best, and thanks, my friend,

Spike, I went back and altered the hyperlinks, and dropped,
"http://www.lcn-hoa.com," for each of the four .pdf files in the "downloads"
sub-folder.

I did the Publish to the web in my .pub file, and the system asked me if I
wanted to replace the old index.htm with the newer version, and I said yes.

I then clicked on the index.htm inside of the new folder on my C-Drive stem,
HOA WEBSITE, and up came a picture of the website when officially published.

The four .pdf files do not load, and when I click on them, I get:
-------------------------------------
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:
Diagnose Connection Problems

More information
-----------------------------------

All the four new hyperlinks are written like the following first hyperlink:

/downloads/bylaws_LNCII_6.pdf

Any more suggestions?

What happens when you double click on the pdf files? (do they open?)
What browser and version are you using?
What operating system are you using?
Can you open pdf files on the web from other web sites?

++ No they do not open; I get the error message I sent earlier.
What browser and version are you using?

++Browser: IE8
What operating system are you using?

++Windows VISTA Ultimate
Can you open pdf files on the web from other web sites?

++I have not used Filezilla yet to load the new .pub file to the website, so
I cannot tell you.

Another 2 questions!

Did you create the pdf files?
What program did you create them with?

Spike:

I did not reply accurately to your last question. Yes, I can open any .pdf
file elsewhere on the web, or that comes to me via email.
