Can I open .eps files in Word?

I was told that I should be able to insert .eps files as a picture into word,
but it doesn't seem to be working.

No you cannot open an .eps file in Word. Yes you can insert an .eps
file as a picture in Word. Whether Word can display the inserted .eps
file depends on what version of Word and whether the .eps was created
with a preview.
