Can not open File

I can not open any existing Word files or Excell files. In Word I get - "xxxxx file is not available" and in Excel I get - "the file can not be opened as your virus scan software has detected a problem with the file". I believe both problems are related. I can open the file in Word when I open with WORDPAD.

Here is what I have done: 1) re-installed MS Office, 2) turned off Symantec anti-virus software, 3) tried creating new files in both WORD and EXCEL and saving them to new folders and then reopening - same problem

Any ideas???

Have you done a virus scan on your computer recently?
(Make sure your virus software is upto date before doing
it)

Yes, I have updated the software with the latest version and done a full scan of My Documents and also a file specific scan - no change.

Can you start Word with a blank document?

I am using WORD 2003 and I can start WORD w/ a blank document, save it and when I try to re-open I get the same message. Same thing happens if I save it, close WORD, re-start the PC, start WORD and then try to open it again.

Have you activated your Word and Excel programs with Microsoft? There is a
command under the help menu. If you haven't activated them, the command will
help you do it. If you have, it will tell you that.
