Can you animate individual bars in a bar chart?

Trying to introduce each bar (column) on a bar chart, one column at a time
.... can it be done via animation, or will I have to make a new slide for each?

In PowerPoint 2002/XP and above,
Add the effect you want.
Then right click on the effect, select Effect Options.
Click on the Chart Animation.
Uncheck Animate grid and legend (if you do not want to animate it)
Click on the "Group chart:" dropdown, select By element in category or series.
OK your way out.

In PowerPoint 2000 and below, you can change to By element in category or
series, in Introduce chart elements section (Which is under the Chart Effects
tab).
