Can you make the page number continue from another document?

Sometimes you have to divide a long document into multiple files for
easier management.
In that case, can you make the starting page number linked to another
document so that whatever number was the last page of the previous
document becomes the basis of the first page number of the current
document?

Select the numpages field in the first document and insert a bookmark named
lastpage. Then in the second document, use the following field construction

{ = { LINK Word.Document.8 "Drive:\\Folder\\Filename" "lastpage" \a \t } +
{ PAGE } }
