Cannot delete Sent Items

I am trying to clean up about 2000 messages in a
users "Sent Items" folder. I've tried highlighting one or
more items and clicking on the delete button and I get no
response. I've also right clicked on just one and
selected delete and still nothing. Anybody have any
suggestions as to what may be happening.
