Cannot see a document folder in Word 2003

While using Word 2003, I realize that I don't see a few folders in My
Documents using the file open command. However, by clicking on My documents
folder, I can open the folders and the files within. The problem also arises
when I use the 'save as' command, and don't see the folder where I want to
save the document.
This began suddenly today, and I am not clear why.

I am wondering whether you have changed your Explorer > Tools >
Options > View settings. Eg Don't show system files, hidden files.
