Cannot update Office 2003

Windows XP - Office 2003 - Plenty of disk space.

I run automatic Windows update (download and notify) but I haven't updated
MS Office 2003 for several months. Last month I went to the Windows Update
site and accepted the offer to sign up for Microsoft Update which
automatically updates Windows and Office. Since then. I've been getting
Office updates (7) and when I try to install them I get a notice that the
updates failed. Microsoft Update keeps trying to install them but it always
fails. I've downloaded several of the updates myself and when I run them I
get the same failure.

I've been to the troubleshooting site and searched the Knowledge base for a
possible answer. I've read and followed KB826511, KB884290, KB 884298 and
several others. I've searched several tech support forums on the internet
with no success. If it's significant, my 'MSO Cache' folder is on the E:\
drive. I may have moved it there, I don't recall, but the registry entries
do point to the E: drive.

I tried reading the OHotfix(00002).log file and the OU(00008)_Msi.log file
but I was in over my head. I did find 'Return Value 3' but don't know where
to go from there.

Any suggestions/help will be appreciated.

The "MSO Cache" folder should be located on the same partition
as your Office program. Did you try downloading updates directly
from the Office Update web site?

Carey: According to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=830168
"Frequently asked questions about the Local Install Source
feature in Office 2003", the MSOCACHE folder is not necessarily
located in the same partition as the Office program:

"When one or more of your disk drives has more then 1.5 GB of
free space, the disk drive with the most available space is used
for the Local Install Source feature. When one or more of your
disk drives has more then 1.5 GB of free space, and one of the
drives that has more then 1.5 GB of free space use the NTFS file
system, the largest NTFS drive on your computer is used for the
Local Install Source feature, even if it is not the largest drive
on your computer.

When the Local Install Source feature is used, the files that are
copied to your disk drive are copied to a new hidden folder at
the root of the drive, and the folder is named \MSOCACHE. Only
local drives that are non-removable are eligible to host the
files copied by the Local Install Source feature."

Carey,
Yes. as I pointed out I did download several of the updates and tried to
install them from my hard drive. Same failure.
Since Garfield-n-odie states that the MSO CACHE file does not necessarily
have to be on the same drive as Office, I guess that is not an issue.

Perform a "Disk Cleanup", then repair Office 2003.

Follow this procedure to repair your existing Office installation:

1. Open the Add or Remove Programs applet in your Control Panel.
2. Click once on the Microsoft Office 2003 entry to highlight.
3. Next, click on the "Change" button.
4. Afterward, select "Reinstall or Repair" and click Next.
5. Your existing Office 2003 installation will be repaired and files retained.

Carey,
Did as you suggested - "Insallation Unsuccessful" on all 7 updates. I am
already updated to Win XP SP2.

Garfield-n-odie,
I had already done some of the procedures in KB304498. Performed all except
running Windows Installer cleanup and No.9 Clean Boot which required too
many changes to my system tonight. Still not working.

Carey,
I ran Office 'Repair'. I received an error - 'Installation ended prematurely
because of an error'.

Carey and Garfield-n-odie,
Thanks so much for your interest and suggestions.

This morning I bit the bullet - took an image of my C: drive, uninstalled
and re-installed MS Office Pro 2003.

First I tried the Junk mail filter update and it installed OK
Then I treid Office SP1 and it installed OK
I then tried the remaining 6 updates and all installed except the French
Spelling and Thesaurus spelling checker (which I don't believe is
installed).
So far, everything seems OK.
Thanks again,
Ed Redman

Yes, g-n-o is correct, it doesn't need to be on the same drive as your
Office installation.

However, if you aren't sure if you moved MsoCache at some point then
to be on the safe side, you may want to download the LIS Tool and make
sure the possible move is not what is causing the problem:

assistance by email can not be acknowledged.
