cannot view Autoshapes diagrams in Normal Layout View

Whenever I create diagrams or flowcharts in a Word
document, if the program opens the document in Normal
Layout, the document is only about 1/3 size and the
diagrams are not there. The view must be switched to
View-Print Layout in order to see the diagrams. Is there a
way to create them so that they are viewable in Normal Layout?
(The document is a grant that must be submitted without any
special instructions, like what Layout the document must be
in.) Thank you in advance for any help.

Objects in the drawing layer (which includes AutoShapes) are not visible in
Normal view. In recent versions of Word, some floating objects can be
converted to inline (which makes them visible in Normal view). In earlier
versions, you can copy, Paste Special as Picture, and make them inline. See
