can't access backed up .pst files

I've backed the .pst file to a cd. To access it, I've
returned it to the .pst file on the harddrive, then gone
to the file in outlook and opened it. but I get'Access is
denied'

Right click the file on your hard drive. Select Properties. Clear the Read
Only flag.

I've cleared the read only flag and changed to archive-
still no access is allowed

Have you done this when Outlook was still open? You need to restart Outlook
before you notice it notices the change. You might also need to restart the
PC or kill the Outlook.exe process (or mapisp32.exe I believe on older
versions)
