Can't change row height in standard Gantt Chart

This is driving me crazy. All I want is for the rows to do a word wrap or to
be able to adjust the row height by dragging so I can read the entire Task
Name. I can do this dragging in the detailed Gantt Chart, but NOT in the
"standard" Gantt Chart. It seems like the ID column allows this, but when I
insert that column, it won't let me drag the height. We have an entire
project done in the Gantt Chart, but when we switch to a Detailed Gantt,
everything gets messed up (colors, labels, etc.) and we don't want to redo
the whole thing. Another Project file I have has the adjustable row ability
in the "standard" Gantt Chart but I have no idea how to set it up like that.
I've also read the suggestions at the MS Project general questions on row
height newsgroup, but nothing works. What is adding fuel to my fire is that
one task name entry IS word wrapping and its row is definitely set to at
least 2 or 3, but I can't figure out why. I know this isn't Excel or Word,
but changing the row height shouldn't be this difficult!! I have MS Project
2002 Professional. Please help me before I go postal. ;) Thanks.

Hi Dave,

Whoa Dave -- deep breath -- we certainly can't have you going postal -- at
least not over Project! ;-)
It sounds as though the "Standard" Gantt chart in the problem project file
has been modified (your comment about inserting the ID column leads me
there.) As a suggestion, try copying and renaming your existing troublesome
Gantt chart (View > More Views, select Gantt Chart and copy. Rename the
view to something other than Gantt.) Then try copying the Gantt chart view
from the other project file that all is well in back to the trouble file
using the Organizer. (Open both files first then choose Tools > Organizer
and copy the Gantt view.)

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks JulieS for your suggestion. I tried it two times, but whenever I
switch over to the copied Good Gant Chart in my problem file, the dragable
row numbers disappear. I thought it was the ID column, but it doesn't have a
column heading. It's just a numbered list (number of rows). Is there a way of
turning that sort of column on? It's colored gray just like the dragable
column headings. The ID column is white, but the column I want (row numbers)
is gray and you can drag the row height with it. Is this something like a
"ruler" in other programs?? When I switch over to a Detailed Gantt it shows
up, so it must be a tool or some sort of setting? Arrrrggghhhh!!! I hate
Microsoft!

Hi Dave,

The column you are referring to as "row numbers" is the ID column the title
ID is just not showing in a standard table definition.
Try this: in the "Good Gantt Chart" view, choose View > Table: and from the
submenu choose More Tables. A table (most likely the Entry table) should
already be selected. Click the Edit button to open the Table Definition
dialog box. If the ID field name is not the first listed in the table, click
the first item listed, and click Insert Row. From the new blank row, select
ID from the Field Name drop down. If you have the ID field showing up again
in the list, delete that row.
Click the Lock first column check box.
Try increasing the Row height spin box.
Click OK to save the changes and close the Table Definition dialog box.
Click Apply in the More tables dialog box.

It also *may* be a file corruption. See FAQ #43 at:
http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Let us know how these suggestions work.

Julie,

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! Did I
mention thank you??

I went into View|Table|More Tables, Entry was highlighted, and hit Edit like
you suggested. "ID" was the first item listed, and I noticed that the "width"
was set to 0. I increased it to 5 and said OK and hit Apply, and it works
perfectly now! I can drag the row height to whatever I need.

Thank you so very much! I never, EVER would have figured that out on my own.
You rock! Thanks again! And Microsoft should thank you as well: now I won't
have to visit their headquarters and go ballistic.... :D
