can't double click

I'm using Visio 2003 for the first time. I'm trying to double-click an Entity shape from the Database, Entity Relationships set of shapes. The shape is in a new document, and supposedly double clicking it should bring up a Databast Proprties box where I can edit the name, columns (fields), primary key, secondary indices, etc.

This isn't happening. Double clicking does nothing. I've tried several things to find this dialogue box where I can edit the above items, but no success.

Help!

Are you seeing the Database menu in the menu bar? If not this would mean
that the Database Modeling solution is currently not running. A couple of
different issues might cause this, but generally if you start from the
Database Model Diagram template, things should work.

If you do see the Database menu but cannot get double-click to work, can you
right click and choose Database Properties from the menu instead? I'm not
too familiar with the details of this shape, but apparently the properties
box does not show up if there are custom edits made to the shape. Can you
drag out a new shape and get the properties box to show up?

Mark, thanks for your help -

What I've discovered is that I can't open a new database drawing for any of the models that involve the database. I don't see "Database" in the menu bar, and I don't get "Database Properties" when I right-click on an object. I went to a school computer to compare, and I could do what I needed on their machines.

Here's what I can't do: File-->New-->Database-->(any of the options) -- the result of choosing one of these options is that my Visio freezes up ("not responding") every time. I can go into File-->New, and choose anything else except Database drawings, and things work fine.

What would prevent me from working with the database drawings? Should "Database" be an item in my menu along with File, Edit, View, Insert...? I tried running Detect and Repair through the Help menu, as well as re-installing (by running the setup file, which gave me the option to re-install). Neither worked.

Aside from that, the reason I couldn't double-click before was because I was simply opening a new document, and inserting the Entity shape from the Database-->Entity Relationship Diagram shape set. But since I didn't open the new drawing as a Database Modeling Diagram (File-->New-->Database-->Datab. Mod. Diag.), I wasn't actually working in a database environment. Hence, no Daabase Properties box.

So, that's the problem. I simply cannot open any of the Database drawing environments.

Frustrating. By the way, I downloaded the software from MSDN for school - I'm sure I installed it correctly.

Thanks

Those symptoms point to an improperly installed database solution, though I
don't know specifically how to remedy. Detect and Repair would be the
normal recommendation. Is more than one version of Visio on the machine,
such as Visual Studio Enterprise Architect 2003 (which includes Visio) and
Microsoft Office Visio 2003?

One other item to check is that you have Automation Events enabled under
Tools > Options > Security.

Mark,

I checked to make sure that automation events were enabled, and they were.

I do have Visual Studio.NET 2003 on this machine (I don't use it, but it was available though MSDN), but I don't think it includes Visio. I have no previous installs of Visio on my machine.

I tried installing Visio on my laptop using the files that I downloaded from MSDN just to see if it would work properly on a different computer, and it had the same problem. Maybe something went wrong with the MSDN download?

Anyways, thanks for your help - if you have any more ideas, I'd be happy to hear them.

Hey,

Here's the solution to this strange problem:

I just worked through this on the phone with Microsoft - turns out that my Epson C82 Inkjet was causing the problem!!

The MS assistant had me delete the printer from my Printers and Faxes folder, and it worked fine after that. But, of course, I need a printer, so he had me re-install my Epson C82, and then add another "dummy" printer (I just picked a random printer from Windows' list of printer drivers and installed it on LP1). Then, I made the "dummy" printer the default. Visio database drawings work like a charm now.

So, anytime I want to use Visio, I have to go into my printer folder and make the dummy printer default. I can switch it back when I'm not using Visio - and I can print the database drawing by simply selecting my actual Epson printer from the print dialogue box.

Kind of a weird problem - I wish there was a fix to the Epson driver.

The MS support said that there was others with the same issue, so maybe there will be at some point.

Thanks for posting the solution. Strange how that is the culprit.

Holy Sh*t! The same exact problem has been plaguing me, and I have an
Epson C82 printer! I'm glad you posted this here. Thanks!
