Can't get rid of visible formatting

Formatting has suddenly shown up in saved documents and when I create a new
blank document. I've tried every instruction from "Help" carefully and
repeatedly, and they don't work. How do I get rid of it?

What do you mean by "formatting"? If you're referring to the non-printing
formatting marks, you can toggle them on/off using Ctrl+Shift+8 (the 8/* key
on the top row... not the 8 key on the number pad).

perhaps "Normal.dot" has been saved over with formatting?
