can't open documents after saving & closing them.

I'm running Windows XP Professional with Office XP
Professional. I can create documents fine in Word. But
when I save them and close them, next time I want to get
into the file, I get a message that "Word cannot open file
doc5.doc", or whatever I've named the file.
Also, when I close out of Word, I get a message saying
that changes have been made in normal.dot, do I want to
save changes? Whether I save changes or not, I have the
same problem with the files not opening. I've reinstalled
Office, and still get the same problem.
Can anyone help me please? I'd greatly appreciate it.

I'm in the same boat as you! I posted on this awhile back
and was told it was an antivirus add in or some other add
in. When I removed all add ins the behavior persisted!
BTW, this is after a complete uninstall / reinstall. When
I posted back for other ideas I got no response. Now this
fine error is showing up in my Excel 2002! I'll be
interested in the reply you get. The only one I can think
of is to move to Corel!!!(Just kidding!)

Again, as the subject points out, we are NOT having
problems opening Word. We cannot OPEN Word documents once
Word is running....
