Can't Open Excel Embedding Object

J

I can't seem to open and Excel embedded worksheet in Word 2007 files after I
saved and closed the files. I got

"The program used to create this object is Excel. That program is not
installed on your computer. To edit this object, you must install a program
that can open the object."

I made sure add the folder name in TRUST LOCATION in both Excel and Word.
And I checed "Ignore other applicate that use DDE" in
Options/Advanced/General also in both Word and Excel. I allowed all ActiveX
application to run in both.

I am not getting anywhere. The computer will asked me if I want to correct
the problem. I click YES, then, it will run the Office Setup program for
"CONFIGURATING" I have no idea what it is doing. After about 10 min, it
tells me to reboot. I did that and restarted the PC, same thing will happen.

I tried creating a NEW Word file. Insert an Excel table, just enter 2 cells
in Excel with random keys strokes. Then close it. I can reopen the Excel
table without problem. As soon as I close Word and reopen the file. the
Embedded object is locked out.

This does not happen in 1 computer. I have the same problem on three
computers

1. Dell Laptop A
XP Profession with Administrator Right (SP3)
Office Ultimate 2007 with SP1 installed (All features installed)
2 GB RAM, 80 GB HD (with 50 GB Free space)

2. Dell Desktop
Vista Ultimate with Administrator Right
Office Ultimate 2007 with SP1 installed (All features installed)
3 GB RAM, 250 GB HD with 120 GB Free Space

3. HP Tablet TX2000
Vista Business with Administrator Right (SP1)
Office Professional 2007 with SP1 installed (All features installed)
2 GB RAM, 160 GM HD with 100 GB Free Space

I am lost. I can't see where the problems come from. I did not have the
problem about 1 month ago. Now all three machines has the same problem.

One more interesting info. All three machine has Office 2003 SP3 installed,
even I do not have any Office 2003 application in the systems. I saw a guys
posted in Tutorials-win.com having the same problem in Nov 07. There is no
answer to his request for help. So, I may assume the problem does not have
to do with Office 2003 SP3.

Please help. If you want a sample file, let me know.

Hi Johnny,

What are the exact steps you're using to embed the worksheet in Word 2007?

Are you working in Excel/Word 2007 legacy (97-2003) format or in the new file formats?

Is Excel open or closed when you embed the file?

I'm not sure I'm following you regarding having the Office 2003 programs also installed, but not showing in the system? Does that
mean that you have more than one, for example version of excel.exe on the system and more than one winword.exe? If so, when you
check the file associations for .xls files, for example are they pointing to the folder with the 2007 version? I assume this was an
upgrade from that version in place?

Can you provide a link to a document showing the behavior (a zip with both the document and worksheet could be helpful).

Bob.

Here is what I did and what I found so far.

I insert a spreadsheet by
[Insert - Table - Excel Spreadsheet]. Once I'd done that, the spreadsheet
is opened automatically. I edit the spreadsheet and click somewhere else in
the document to exit the DDE. I save and close the word file in 2007 format
(docx). I reopen the file, it will not let me open the spreadsheet
I tried [Insert - Object - Object... - Create New - Microsoft Office Excel
Worksheet]. Same thing will happen.
I tried [Insert - Object - Object... - Create New - Microsoft Office Excel
97-2003 Worksheet]. Same thing will happen.
The only combination it will allow me to open the spreadsheet object again
is if I create the Excel 97-2003 Worksheet and save the Word file in 97-2003
format. Then I will have no problem opening the file.

One more things. All 3 machines I have are up-to-date on all Windows and
Office updates. I just tried the same file I had problem with in another PC
that does not have all the Windows and Office update, the file will open
without problem.

What I meant about Office 2003 SP3 is not that I have both versions of
Office in the same system. I have only 2007 Office programs in all 3
computers. I have the Office Ultimate 2007 plus Project Professional 2007
and Visio Professional 2007. As far as I know, I do not have any Office 2003
software installed. The only thing is close this Office 2003 is that I have
MapPoint 2006 on two of the PCs. When I looked at the Windows Update
history, I found all three computer shows Windows Update installed Office
2003 SP3 (the update) installed. I am not sure why or what triggered the
update of software which I don't have.

I put three files in my SkyDrive.

Doc2.docx is a word file I just created this morning
Doc3.docx is the screen capture collections
Document Change Form.docx is the file I have been using for over a year now
and start giving me the problem.

Again, these file work in a PC without the latest updates.

If you have any other question, please let me know.

Thanks

I resolved the problem by

1. Right-clicking on the Excel object
2. Click Worksheet Object -> Convert...
3. Choose Microsoft Office Excel Binary Worksheet
4. Click OK

After it converts it to a Binary worksheet, you can then repeat the process
and choose Microsoft Office Excel Worksheet instead.

I tried the following fixes with no luck.
1. Repairing and then reinstalling Office 2007

2. http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel/HP052034881033.aspx Clearing the ignore other applications in Excel Options. This actually made it to where I could not open Excel files at all by double clicking on them. Unchecked and I was able to open them by double clicking again.

3. Right clicking on the Excel object and choosing to covert it to a Microsoft Excel Binary Worksheet.

4. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/960806/EN-US This KB article asked me to update SQL Data Mining Add-ins but I didn't have SQL installed to do so and it prompted me to install the trial version. I didn't even try.

5. Uninstall Office 2003 SP3. We have Microsoft Document Imaging installed on all our 07 PCs to edit TIF docs so 03 SP3 was installed. Uninstalled both SP3 and MS Doc Imaging. Nothing

This is what worked.
6. Uninstalled Office 07. Then used the instructions from this KB to manually uninstall Office 07. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 Now, I haven't reinstalled the Microsoft Document Imager, but when I do, I'm going to run updates and tell it to not install SP3 for Office 03.

Check your add-ins. Disable all Excel add-ins and try again. This worked for me. When you have a chance, you can then re-enable add-ins one by one until you isolate the one which is causing the problem.
