Can't Switch Directories in Open File Dropdown

When I log into any MS Office 2003 application and click on File>Open I get
the standard "Open" window for selecting a file. This is set to open to "My
Documents". Suddenly, when I try to clicke on the drop down arrow to select
another directory, my application either locks up or freezes. I get the we
are now leaving this application window sometimes and other times the home
directory will spontaneously change.

If I click File>Open and click on a folder in My Documents it works fine. I
just can't change the directory any longer using the drop down arrow in the
Open window. This is the same thing I get in all MS Office applications.
It doesn't happen in any other programs (e.g. SPSS, Macromedia Suite,
Acrobat). I am running Windows XP Pro. I've searched the Microsoft
database in vain and come up with nothing. I can open My Documents fine
from the desktop and from Windows Explorer. I've re-installed MS Office to
no avail. I've also run a System Restore going back in time before this
started.

Any help with this is appreciated.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop,
left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped
drives that are not currently available.
