Change defaults for all Office 2003

My Office 2003 programs all open with the MS Office Online screen up. How can
I change the (global?) default so the programs open to a blank
page/worksheet/project? (I may sound like a Luddite because I want "my old"
settings from Office XP. It's habit.)

Tools, Options, View, uncheck Startup task pane

"uncheck Startup task pane": I did. I still get it.

There's a Reg hack that will disregard the state of showing the task
pane on startup which is added to the Registry a few third-party
add-ins. You can download the Task Pane Controller which will make the
necessary Registry modifications for you:
