change the icon for new folders on my desktop

I would like to change the icons for folders I create. I do not like the
standard folder looking icon and would like to replace it with a picture that
lets me know what the folder is. I need this in plain english. Some of the
answers I have read tend to be too technical.

Well... technically, this is an Office newsgroup. What you want is a
newsgroup either for Windows Windows Vista, depending on what operating
system you're using.

But... have you tried right-clicking on the folder in question, and choosing
Properties? In Vista, click on the Customize tab, then click on Change Icon.

In Windows XP, I seem to recall that there's a Change Icon as well (perhaps
in the General tab, since there is no Customize tab). But, I can't check
since I don't have easy access to Windows XP at the moment.

Not an Office issue, and I would suggest that you DON'T put the folders
themselves in the desktop folder but use a shortcut instead. THEN make
the icon anything you want.
