Changing between templates on a mac.

Hi,

New to the whole template thing, I tried to create a template with my
preferred styles, headings, index, font, font size,... Works just
fine... if
I start a brand new document.

However, if I start a new document without using my template, it is
(off
course) still using the default template 'normal'. Changing this
template
into my own template is not working, so I must overlook something I
suppose.
I browsed a bit and found this solution (that does not work with me):
Got to tools ---> Template and Add-in ---> Attach template ---> click
on
the template and open it and click 'automatically update' ---> click
ok
Result nothing changes.
So I tried to click organizer ---> and copy all the styles of my own
template to the one I wish to change, overwrite them all --> click
close
Result: nothing changes.
So another attempt was to add the template to the 'Global items and
templates' but again result: nothing.

I say nothing since the font did not change (and is different in both
templates, I'm sure!).
Also not that I created my own template on this mac, so no windows mac
compatibility problem here.

Ok, that's the problem. Now: what am I'm doing wrong?

And another question: macro's and template are correlated right? As
in: you
can 'assign' a macro to a template and only that template. You can off
course
copy them to other templates as well, but they are directly related to
a
particular template. Correct?

Hi Dirk:

OK, you need to know that the Golden Rule for posting in here is to tell us
the VERSION and LEVEL of your copy of Word, and your Operating System.
Without that information, we cannot safely answer most questions.

These lists support about 20+ versions of Word and numpty+ operating
systems, and we can't read your screen from here :)

One thing that is not explained properly in the Help is that a document
makes no further reference to its template after the document is created.
That's worth knowing :)

The exception is if you fire a macro: at that stage, Word will load it from
the template.

The other thing worth knowing is that Word has a hierarchy of templates. It
searches in the sequence Document -> Attached Template -> Global Template(s)
-> Normal Template.

Whatever it wants, it stops looking the first place it finds one with the
correct name. In the case of Styles, that's normally the "Document itself".

Your forcing "Automatically update styles..." should have (would have)
updated all the styles in the document. Which would fix that.

However, in your case, I suspect that the document has Direct Formatting
applied. If it has, the direct formatting overrides the styles. The styles
HAVE updated, you simply can't see that.

Remove the Direct formatting (Command + Spacebar then Command + Option + q)
and you should then see the style change appear.

Hope this helps

Try opening up the Normal template--don't know where it is, depends on
your version--and customizing it as you like. Then your defaults will
always be used.
